One of my favorite quotes is from the back of the latest Boy Sets Fire Album. I havent been listening to them for very long, but they make some good music. Here's the quote, i hope this is legal:
We have been written off. The force of social activism that once threatened to bring the status quo to its knees is now seen as nothing more than a nostalgic walk down memory lane. The movement, they say is dead - buried - and finally, the eulogy read.
But wherever there is hope for a better world, there is revolution. Wherever a dream is embraced that runs counter to society, there is revolution. And wherever there is a love for your fellow man and hatred for your oppression, there is revolution. Social activism failed in the past because of exclusion. In the sixties it was the long haired freak pitted against the hard hatted union auto worker. But as we saw in seattle in 99, freaks and unions laborers now march side by side because our goals are the same; the end to all oppression and exploitation, whether it be spiritual, economic, environmental, or anything else.
We can no longer, in good conscience, keep our politics from those who need them the most. We cannot continue to arbitrarily decide who is cool enough to be exposed to a new way of viewing the world and the factors that govern it. To do so is oppressive in itself, short sited, and most critically, morally reprehensible.
There is a better way. There is a world beyond our consumer culture. There is a reason that violence and drug abuse among our children is sky rocketing. Our society is sick, bloated and drowning under the weight of its own excesses. These are the symptoms of a sickness that is infecting every aspect of our world.
There is a better way.
